Red dot mounts

A red dot mount lets you add a miniature red dot sight to a pistol, revolver, shotgun, or rifle without permanently modifying the firearm. On a pistol, the most common approach is a dovetail mount — it replaces the factory rear sight and seats in the existing rear sight dovetail on the slide. No drilling, no machining, and no permanent change to the slide. If you want to return to iron sights, you reinstall the factory rear sight and nothing is different.

The reason to add a red dot is straightforward: it gives you a single focal plane between your eye and the target. With iron sights, your eye has to shift focus between rear sight, front sight, and target — three reference points at three distances. With a red dot, the dot appears to sit on the target and both are in focus at the same time. Under time pressure, this shortens the sight acquisition step meaningfully. In IPSC competition, that directly translates to faster stage times. In a duty or carry context, it reduces the cognitive load of getting a sight picture under stress.
